In the second of a series of how pop and rock music has interacted with politics, this week we look at songs that have been used by Politicians in campaigns or in other ways.

This is not to endorse their use but to examine why songs can be used to short circuit the communication connections between potential office holders and their supporters. So this week we are showcasing some songs that were harnessed by a range of politicians of all political hues and how this worked or not in their favour. The tradition dates back to 1909 with WC Handy’s ‘Memphis Blues’ written for the Mayor of Memphis and gives me the excuse to play the oldest song ever on the show! Frank Sinatra’s ‘High Hopes’ was used by JFK and of course D:Ream’s ‘Things can only get better’ was famously used by Tony Blair in 2003. Many songs like The Foo Fighters ‘Times Like These’ were highjacked without permission – in that case inspiring Dave Grohl to campaign for the opposition.

If you have a song that will be forever associated with a particular campaign please email me at roy.stannard@seahavenfm.com
